Senaru Trekking Route
Experience Rinjani’s Lush Forest and Stunning Crater Rim
Welcome to the Senaru Trekking Route, one of the most celebrated and visually rewarding paths up Mount Rinjani. As a premier starting point on the northern slopes of the mountain, Senaru is famous for its dense, ancient rainforests and the spectacular panoramic views from the crater rim. Whether you are booking a quick 2-Day/1-Night adventure or a longer expedition, Rudy Trekker ensures a safe, fully guided, and unforgettable journey along this classic trail.
Route Overview
-
Starting Elevation: Senaru Village (601 meters)
-
Target Destination: Senaru Crater Rim / Pelawangan Senaru (2,641 meters)
-
Trail Environment: Lush tropical rainforest changing to rocky savannah near the rim.
-
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging (Suitable for fit beginners and experienced hikers).
What to Expect on the Trail
The Senaru route begins at the Rinjani Trekking Centre in Senaru Village. Unlike the exposed Sembalun route, the first 6 to 7 hours of the Senaru trail are sheltered by a thick, canopy-covered tropical rainforest.
Pos 1 (Extra) to Pos 2 (Montong Satas): The trek starts with a gentle ascent through the vibrant jungle. You will likely encounter local wildlife, including the rare black ebony leaf monkey and the more common long-tailed macaques. The shade of the giant trees makes this section of the climb cool and comfortable.
Pos 3 (Mondokan Lokak) to the Crater Rim: After passing Pos 3, the tree line begins to thin out, transitioning into grassy meadows and rocky paths. The final two hours require a steep push up to the Senaru Crater Rim (Pelawangan Senaru). This physical challenge is instantly rewarded once you crest the rim.
Route Highlights
-
Pelawangan Senaru (Crater Rim): Your main campsite for the night. This vantage point offers one of the most photographed views in Indonesia.
-
Segara Anak Lake & Mt. Baru Jari: Look down directly into the volcano’s caldera to see the striking turquoise waters of Segara Anak Lake and the active inner cone, Mount Baru Jari, smoking gently in the center.
-
Sunset and Sunrise: The Senaru Crater Rim is perfectly positioned for spectacular sunsets. On a clear evening, you can see the sun dip below the horizon with the Gili Islands and Bali’s Mount Agung visible in the distance.
-
Shaded Ascent: The dense jungle canopy protects trekkers from the harsh tropical sun for the majority of the climb, reducing heat exhaustion and preserving energy.
Who Should Choose the Senaru Route?
The Senaru route is ideal for trekkers who have limited time but still want to experience the majesty of Mount Rinjani. The 2-Day/1-Night Senaru Crater Rim trek is highly recommended for beginners, families with older children, or nature lovers who prefer hiking in the shade of the forest over the open savannah. It provides maximum visual reward—the lake, the volcano, and the sunset—without the extreme physical demand of summiting the highest peak.
