Sembalun Trekking Route
The Gateway to the Summit of Mount Rinjani
Welcome to the Sembalun Trekking Route, the most popular and direct path for adventurers aiming to conquer the majestic 3,726-meter summit of Mount Rinjani. Starting from a picturesque, high-altitude agricultural village on the eastern side of the mountain, the Sembalun trail is famous for its sweeping open savannahs, dramatic rolling hills, and the ultimate sunrise view from the top of the volcano. If your goal is to stand on the roof of Lombok, Rudy Trekker is here to guide you to the top safely and successfully.
Route Overview
-
Starting Elevation: Sembalun Village (1,156 meters)
-
Target Destination: Mount Rinjani Summit (3,726 meters) & Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 meters)
-
Trail Environment: Expansive grassy savannahs, pine forests, and steep volcanic scree (sand and gravel).
-
Difficulty Level: Challenging to Demanding (Requires high stamina, strong physical fitness, and mental endurance for the summit attack).
What to Expect on the Trail
The Sembalun trail is notably different from the Senaru route. Because it starts at a higher elevation, it gives you a head start on your ascent, but it comes with its own unique challenges.
Sembalun Gate to Pos 3 (Pada Balong):
Your journey begins with a relatively flat but long walk through a vast, open savannah. While the incline is gentle, this section is exposed to the sun, so sun protection is essential. The breathtaking views of the Rinjani peak looming in the distance will keep you motivated.
Pos 3 to Sembalun Crater Rim (Pelawangan Sembalun):
After a lunch break, the real work begins. You will face a steep, continuous climb up the infamous “Bukit Penyesalan” (Hills of Regret). Pushing through this steep, pine-studded section will bring you to the Sembalun Crater Rim, your basecamp for the night. Here, you will rest, eat, and sleep above the clouds.
The Summit Attack:
The final push to the summit begins around 2:00 AM. This is the most demanding part of the trek. You will hike in the dark, navigating steep terrain covered in loose volcanic sand and gravel. For every two steps forward, you may slide one step back. However, reaching the peak just as the sun rises makes every drop of sweat worth it.
Route Highlights
-
The Summit (3,726m): The ultimate reward. Watch the sunrise illuminate the entire island of Lombok, with Bali’s Mount Agung to the west and Sumbawa’s Mount Tambora to the east.
-
Savannah Scenery: The sweeping, golden-green meadows of the Sembalun valley offer a completely different visual experience compared to tropical jungles.
-
Pelawangan Sembalun (Crater Rim): Your high-altitude campsite offers incredible sunset views over Segara Anak Lake and the smoking Mount Baru Jari.
-
The Best Starting Point for Longer Treks: The Sembalun route is the standard starting point for our 3-Day and 4-Day packages, allowing you to summit first and then descend into the crater to enjoy the lake and hot springs.
Who Should Choose the Sembalun Route?
The Sembalun route is specifically designed for trekkers who have their sights set on the summit. It is recommended for:
-
Summit Chasers: If reaching the highest point of Mount Rinjani is your main goal, you must start in Sembalun.
-
Fit and Active Hikers: The summit push requires excellent stamina, mental grit, and physical fitness.
-
Extended Explorers: Those looking to do the complete Rinjani circuit (Sembalun to the Summit, down to the Lake, and out via Senaru or Torean).
